Building a chicken coop is hard work. Cowboy boots and comfy dresses help. Through the years all my kids have helped me build things. Each of them has shown interest in how things come to be in the world. Instead of shooing them away or letting them only watch, I give them scrap wood, nails, and a hammer. The real stuff I use – no flimsy kid stuff. If they hit their finger, poke themselves with a nail, or get a splinter, they learn a little bit about actions, consequences, and physics in a low stakes situation. What typically happens is they end up with one or two pieces of wood with bent nails sticking out of every surface, and they couldn’t be prouder of their work. I’m proud of it, too.

It was a dark and stormy day…

I’ve been stuck in the CLT airport because a terrible airline can’t get flight crews to match airplanes. I won’t give the name of the airline but its initials are PSA (flying under American). My flight from Omaha was right on time, but I’ve been waiting in Charlotte for five hours. The worst part is it only takes four to drive it. I knew I should’ve rented a car. I won’t make this mistake again. The bright side? I finished “Lust for Life” by Irving Stone (phenomenal!) and picked up @adamgrant ‘s new one titled “Think Again.”

I signed up for a year-long writing workshop with my friend Amy Hale around this time last year. In the past eleven months, I’ve hand-written (my preferred method) over 2000 pages in my notebooks and have a workshop word document of almost 150,000 words – that’s over 500 pages and still rising. The best part about the whole thing is that some of the things I’ve written over the past year don’t suck! This workshop has taught me more about writing than I’ve learned over the past thirty-five years since I first decided I wanted to be one of those weird people who change the shapes on paper.

This is by far one of the best nonfiction books I’ve ever read. I thought it would be music-heavy considering what @rickrubin is most known for, but I was wonderfully wrong. This book is about creativity, period, no matter the medium. The Creative Act is well-written and doesn’t contain one unnecessary word - Rubin embraces brevity as a lesson unto itself, and it works beautifully. I’ve read it twice so far and I believe this will become as big a reference as The Elements of Style going forward.
